 First of all, the more knowledge you have the better. Do you have paperwork on the diamond? Old appraisals, receipts and certifications are valuable resources. As a gemologist and jewelry buyer with over 30 years of experience, one of the first questions I ask customers when they are trying to sell me diamonds is do they have any information on the diamond. Most diamonds that people are trying to sell are mounted, so the buyer will have to measure the stone to determine the carat weight. Depending on how the stone is mounted, getting an accurate weight can be difficult. How the stone is mounted can make determining clarity and color difficult as well.

When I am buying a diamond, I will do all of my own measurements and calculations and then compare them to any receipts or certifications that the customer may have.  If my calculations agree with the customers info it gives me added confidence that the diamond will weigh what I think it will once it is removed from the mounting. This allows me to offer more money.

The second action item is for you to get more than one offer, and look into the reputation of the people you are dealing with. With online sources such as Google and Yelp, it is easy to find out what other customers think of the local jewelry buyers in your area.
